Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso was formerly called Upper Volta and lies in West Africa. Its size is 274,000 km2 and it has more than fifteen and a half million inhabitants. The capital of this Sahel country is called Ouagadougou (pronounce: Wagadugu).
Until its independence in 1960, it was a French colony. The official language is French, besides that about 65 languages are spoken. Beside their own language, most people speak one of the two trade languages Mooré or Dioula. Burkina Faso means: “land of the upright people”.
We live in the “city” Batié, the capital of the province Noumbiel. Batié has about 10,000 inhabitants.
Because of its isolated location, even compared to Burkinabe cities, it is a village.
